The International Press Centre (IPC) has called for an immediate and independent investigation into the death of Somtochukwu Maduagwu, a female news anchor and producer with Arise News Channel, who was killed following an armed attack in Abuja on Monday, September 29, 2025.

According to reports, the attack occurred around 3:00 a.m. at Unique Apartments in Katampe, where about fifteen armed men stormed the compound housing 16 apartments. Despite security personnel alerting the police, no immediate response was received.

Maduagwu, who sustained injuries during the invasion, was rushed to Maitama District Hospital but later died.

Relatives allege she was denied urgent medical attention as hospital staff demanded identification before treatment, raising questions about lapses in Nigeria’s emergency and healthcare response systems.

In a statement, IPC’s Executive Director, Lanre Arogundade, expressed deep sorrow and demanded justice.

“We are deeply saddened by the death of journalist Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, and we demand a thorough, independent investigation, as well as the prompt prosecution of the perpetrators,” he said.

He warned that failure to address the case could endanger both citizens and media professionals while fostering a culture of impunity that undermines democracy and press freedom.

The incident adds to growing threats against journalists in Nigeria. IPC recalled the recent killing of Ibadan-based journalist, Peter Ojo, in August 2025, and highlighted its 2024 report, which documented 45 attacks on journalists and 3 on media outlets, with most cases unresolved.

The Centre urged the Nigeria Police Force, the Federal Government, and hospital authorities to act swiftly, ensure justice, and implement reforms to prevent similar tragedies.

It also called on media bodies, civil society groups, and professional associations to unite in demanding accountability.

IPC extended its condolences to Maduagwu’s family, the management of Arise News, and her colleagues, describing her death as “a painful reminder of the dangers journalists face in the line of duty.”
