Nigeria’s powerlifter, Esther Nworgu on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, won Silver in the women’s up to 41kg para-powerlifting event at the ongoing 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris.
The 21-year-old who was one kilogram shy of the gold medal, set two new Paralympic Records en route to medaling, with lifts of 112kg and 118kg in her last two attempts before China’s Zhe Cui made a record-breaking lift of 119kg to snatch gold.
Nworgu, who lost the use of her legs without a clinical reason, as an eight-year-old, won the Silver medal whilst battling a shoulder dislocation which she revealed to the press after the medal presentation.
“I was so emotional because I never expected any medal from this competition, I had an injury two days ago and the doctors confirmed that I should not compete because it was critical.”
“There is no adjective I can use to quantify my happiness right now. It is like heaven to me.”
The silver medal takes Nigeria’s medal tally to two, with Mariam Bolaji having earlier won the bronze in Badminton.
